Picking Your Own Apples


When it comes to your little ones, an apple a day just might keep the doctor away! Apples are loaded with essential vitamins and are both high in fiber and rich in antioxidants. Autumn is the season of the apple, so the there is a bunch of ripe, juicy and sweet apples just ready and waiting to get picked! 

Types of Apples in Ontario

 McIntosh: a deep red color with a green background; strong sweet-tart taste with nuances of spice

Red Delicious: deep red, elongated shaped and five bumps on bottom; sweet but very mild flavour

Empire: dark red, blush with a splash of yellow or green; tastes sweet like a Red Delicious and tart like a McIntosh. 

Crispin (or Mutsu): greenish-yellow exterior with an orange blush; juicy with a sweet-tart flavour that has subtle hints of spiceGolden

Delicious: yellow or greenish-yellow exterior, elongated shape, five bumps on bottom; balanced sweet-tart aromatic flavour, which has been described as honeyed

Spartan: dark red skin; exceptionally juicy with a balanced sweet-tart apple flavour 

Cortland: bright red with yellow cheek; juicy with a sharp, sweet-tart, vinous flavour

Northern Spy: red-striped skin with green color. Northern Spy is the number one baking apple; cider-quality flavour with hints of pear and sweetness
